Buying New IT Products in India: What You Get vs Open Box, Refurbished & Used

25.03.2025 04:31 PM By Jeetu Saini
Quick answer

A "New" product at Tech Guru Store is factory-sealed, never opened, never used, and carries the full manufacturer (OEM) warranty — plus a GST invoice in your name and a 7-day return window. It is the only one of our four conditions where the seal has never been broken. You pay the most, and you give up nothing.

We sell IT hardware in four conditions — New, Open Box, Refurbished and Used — and the most common question we get is a fair one: what exactly am I getting? This page answers that for New, then compares it honestly to the other three.

What "New" Means at Tech Guru Store

A New product comes to us straight from the manufacturer or their authorised distributor, and has never been opened by anyone — not a customer, not a shop, not us.

The factory seal is intact when it reaches your hands. It has never been powered on, tested, returned, repaired or repackaged. No prior owner, no prior history.

That is the whole definition. Everything else — warranty, invoice, accessories — follows from it.

What You Actually Get With a New Product

Not marketing adjectives — the concrete list of what lands at your door:

  • An unbroken factory seal. You are the first person to open the box.
  • The manufacturer's own warranty — HP, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, Crucial, whoever made it. Registered against the serial number, claimable at any of their service centres, not just through us.
  • Every original accessory — charger, cables, manuals, driver media, mounting screws. Nothing substituted, nothing missing.
  • A GST invoice in your name or your company's name, so you can claim input tax credit and capitalise the asset.
  • Zero history. No prior repairs, no BIOS tampering, no worn battery cycles, no unknown owner.
  • A 7-day return and replacement window on top of the OEM warranty.

New vs Open Box vs Refurbished vs Used

This is the table that clears up most of the confusion. The column that matters most is "Was it ever used?" — that is the real dividing line, not the price.

The one-line version: New and Open Box were never used — the difference is only the seal. Refurbished and Used were used by someone before you — the difference is whether it was professionally tested and restored afterwards.

Which Condition Should You Buy?

Buy New if…You need the OEM warranty for a business asset, you're buying a fleet for a team, it's a mission-critical server or firewall, or the equipment must last 5+ years.
Buy Open Box if…You want new-condition hardware and don't care that a box was opened. Same product, 10–40% less. Read the open box guide →
Buy Refurbished if…Budget is the binding constraint and cosmetic marks don't bother you. Great for secondary machines and student laptops. See refurbished laptops →
Buy Used if…It's a spare, a test bench, or a short-term stopgap and you want the lowest possible price.

A practical example: a new NVMe SSD and an open box one perform identically, so most buyers upgrading a laptop should take the open box saving — see our top 5 internal SSDs guide. But a server running five years in a rack should be New, because the OEM warranty is the thing you are really buying.

Warranty, Invoice & Returns Explained

OEM warranty (New only). Your warranty is with the manufacturer, not with us — register the serial number and you can walk into any of their authorised service centres in India. Typical terms: 1 year on peripherals, 1–3 years on laptops and desktops, 3–5 years on SSDs and RAM. The exact term is on each product page.

Seller warranty (Open Box & Refurbished). Six months, honoured by us directly, for repair or replacement.

GST invoice & returns. Every condition ships with a GST invoice — give us your GSTIN at checkout and it is raised in the company name. All four conditions carry a 7-day return window.

Your Doubts, Answered

Is a new product worth the extra money over open box?
It depends entirely on the warranty. If you need the manufacturer's warranty — for a business asset, a server, or anything mission-critical — then yes. If you just want unused hardware at a lower price and a 6-month seller warranty is enough, open box gives you the same product for 10–40% less.
What is the difference between new and refurbished?
A new product was never used and its seal was never broken. A refurbished product was used by someone, then returned, tested and repaired before resale. New carries the full OEM warranty; refurbished carries a 6-month seller warranty and costs 30–60% less.
Do new products come with a manufacturer warranty in India?
Yes. Every new product at Tech Guru Store carries the full OEM warranty, registered against its serial number and claimable at the brand's authorised service centres anywhere in India — not only through us.
Will I get a GST invoice?
Yes, on every order and in every condition. Provide your GSTIN at checkout and the invoice is raised in your company's name so you can claim input tax credit.
How do I know the product is genuine and not refurbished sold as new?
Check the seal. A genuine new unit arrives with an unbroken factory seal, and the serial number will register as new on the manufacturer's warranty portal. We label every product on our site with its exact condition — New, Open Box, Refurbished or Used — and never blur the line between them.

The Bottom Line

New is the premium condition, and it should be — you are paying for an unbroken seal and the manufacturer standing behind the product. Worth it for business assets, servers and anything that must last. For everything else, another condition will save you real money without costing you performance.
